Shifting calories effective weight loss method?

I've heard that shifting calories to keep your metabolism from stabilizing at a certain caloric intake from day to day works pretty well. Like consuming 2000 one day, 1,200 another, 1,500 for two days, etc. Does any know anything about it? What types of calories your supposed to consume each day and how excercise factors into it? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
