What were your reasons for joining?

I want to join the army and my parents, understandably, want to here concrete reasons, apart form the job secutrity, advancement and all the recruiter type stuff, I can't exactly pinpoint why, the only thing I could tell them is that its something I feel I need and want to do, maybe someone else has been able to put their reasons into words.
