What use to the sea critter in the sea shell are the myriad of tiny spikes in its shell?

I have the middle part of a spiral sea shell which I picked up on a beach in North Devon UK. It has hundreds of tiny spikes in it but not all the way into the middle of the spiral which is really smooth. What are the spikes - are they for the animals protection or are the some form of invading growth?
