What is wrong with the A/C compressor on my 2003 subaru?

Whenever the the A/C is activated (either with the on or by turning the dial to defrost) the compressor kicks on but shuts off right away, after only about 1 second. This happens every time the compressor is supposed to work as the a/c system cycles.
