What can an RN do to become a nurse practitioner? How long will it take?

Im in a RN program now and I was wondering if I could become a nurse practitioner afterwards becaues it seems that they have more freedoms in practice. How long will this take and is it worth my time or do they both make the same amount of cheddar?
