Does density of an adhesive affect the area of coverage ?

A twelve inch trowel with a notch of 1/16x1/16x1/16 square shows a minimum spread rate of 51.3 sf per gallon,yet carpet manufacturers have it at a coverage of 144 sf per gallon ,whats up?
